As of October, 2013 Dirt Craft is proud to be a member of 1% for the Planet. This is a network of progressive businesses committing at least 1% of all sales to environmental organizations of their choosing. Though our business is firmly committed to leaving this world a better place than we found it, empowering people to create heathy, beautiful, ecological, and affordable shelter (thereby creating the circumstances so that they too can put their energy into meaningful work!) we understand that this cannot be done alone.
As much as we've tried to create a business that is part of the solution, we remain endlessly grateful to the tens of thousands of people working on the front lines of environmental issues, holding governments, corporations, and individuals to account, while creating the space for meaningful dialogue on tough but vitally important subjects. As author Paul Hawken puts it, “the shared activity of hundreds of thousands of nonprofit organizations can be seen as humanity’s immune response to toxins like political corruption, economic disease, and ecological degradation.”
Though as modest as 1% may seem, in the context of businesses already providing leadership in using business to do good, this is just one more way that we can help nudge the system back into balance. We look forward to directing some of our sales towards things that we believe are essential to life on this planet – protecting our coastlines from oil tanker traffic, forcing governments to make the labelling of genetically modified foods mandatory, protecting old growth forests and native prairie, to name a few.
For all life on this planet – the people, the trees, the mountains and streams, the fish, the whales and sharks, the foxes and wolves, the amphibians and reptiles, the insects, big and small, the corrals, the plankton – we give our voice to the growing world-wide movement of people fighting to bring balance to our world. The success of a business should not simply be measured by its bottom line but by its contribution to the creation of rich, healthy and enduring communities, human and non-human, with the ultimate goal of building the ecological capacity of our planet so that our future generations can experience the wonder of this magnificent Earth. To paraphrase Moses Henry Cass, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” It's time for each and every one of us to do what we can, in the places we live.
Over the next few months we'll highlight the organizations that we will be supporting through the Fund, with the hope that you'll be inspired by the work and perhaps contribute to it yourself. And on that note, we encourage you to look at 1% for the Planet for yourself. If you have a business, big or small, consider joining. If you work for a company, perhaps you could bring it to the attention of the executive. And be sure to look for businesses that support 1% for the Planet, including a growing number of Canadian companies.
