This was a project we worked on in a straw bale home, in Saskatchewan. The homeowners worked with us to install the earthen floor, over their in-floor heating system. The first layer went in to cover the in-floor heat tubing, and the second layer was carefully laid to create the finish layer, which was hand-troweled the following day, leaving a smooth finish to live and walk on. Once the floor material dries, it will be oiled and waxed to maximize durability and washability. Earthen floors are a great match with in-floor heating systems as they add the thermal mass that is required to make this type of heating effective.
The clay for the mix was from on site, and the sand added was from a ditch down the road. We are super inspired by the dedication to use natural and local materials on this project.
